THREE $1,000 JAVA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS TO BE AWARDED FOR 2009
JAVA’S scholarship program for 2009 is now underway. Prospective applicants will have until mid-April to file their applications.
A number of changes have been made in the competition. The JAVA Executive Council has adopted the following rules and requirements:
1. The program will be open only to high school graduates who have been admitted to a college or university for the 2009-2010 academic year, and to others who are beginning specialized post-high school training or pursuits.
2. All applicants will be required to submit an essay of 500 words or less on a common topic. For 2009, the essay will be on:
“What the winning of a 2009 JAVA memorial scholarship will mean to me.”
3. The JAVA scholarship program is open only to an applicant who is a lineal descendent of (l) a person who served in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, including the l00th Battalion, and all other units that were associated with them, e.g., the 552nd Field Artillery Battalion; or (2) a person who served in the U.S. Military Intelligence Service during and after World War II; or (3) a person of Japanese ancestry who presently serves in the Armed Forces of the United States, or who so served, and was honorably discharged; or (4) a person who is a member of JAVA for a period of no less than one year prior to the date of submission of this application.
The scholarship program honors Orville Shirey, Jack Tashiro and Douglas Ishio, and was funded by their families and friends.
Interested and eligible high school seniors, or others newly entering a post-secondary educational or training program in 2009, are urged to follow this advice:
First, download the rules and application from the JAVA website [www.javadc.org], and start assembling the materials needed to apply.
Second, submit the total package, including transcript information, making sure that it is received by no later than April 22, 2009.
Third, the application, and supporting documentation, should be sent to:

There are three $1,000 scholarships to be awarded. Given the status of the economy, as well as the high cost of education, it is JAVA’s hope that these scholarship awards will assist three deserving high school graduates to meet part of their 2009 tuition and living costs.
It is contemplated that the names of the awardees will be announced at the spring quarterly meeting of the JAVA membership on Saturday, May 16, 2009.
