Feature Article - Bronze Star for Pvt R Asahi Chino

"....On 5 April 1945, the first squad of the second platoon of "L" Company, of which PFC, then PVT Chino, is a member was the leading element of the attack upon the ridges about Mt. Folgorito.  The squad participated in the surprise and the capture of the first enemy outpost of seven men.  Moving forward along the right slope of the ridge, the squad was halted by the fire of entrenched enemy riflemen some 400 yards to the front.  Because the slope was bare of any concealment, it was impossible to assault the enemy positions from the front, consequently, the first squad sought covered positions along the slope and engaged the enemy positions...."

Calendar Events

Feb 17.  Noon at the Jefferson Room, National Archives, 7th St and Constitution Ave, Wash DC.  The Principaled Politician:  Gov Ralph Carr and the Fight Against Japanese  American Internment.  Broadcast journalist and author Adam Schrager discusses his book which tells the story of the only political leader in the coutry to welcome Japanese Americans to his state during WWII.  C olorado Gov Ralph Carr took a courageous, yet unpopular, stance on the internment of Japanese Americans and Japanese American rights. Book signing will follow.

Feb 24. 7 p.m. William G. McGowan Theater, National Archives, 7th St and Constitution Ave, Wash DC.   A Photographic Exploration of the Japanese American Relocation During WWII.  From 1942 to 1945, photographers for the WRA documented the evacuation and relocation of Japanese Americans.  Frank H. Wu, professor of law at Howard Law School, moderates a panel discussion featuring rare War Relocation Authority (WRA) photographs in the National Archives.  A book signing will follow the program.

Apr 21.  Closing date for applications for JAVA 2010 Memorial Scholarship applications...see announcement details above.

May 24.  Opening of Eric Saul's exhibit on Japanese American Experience During WWII at Ellis Island, NYC.  Exhibit on display for 5 months.
